• Occupation: Order Delivery Boy, 1932, Wallasey, Cheshire, England. William's father got him this job with the Co-operative Society to ensure he did not pursue his desire to work as a car mechanic a job which held "No Future" for a young man.

• Occupation: Military Service, 1939, England. William's 2 years "National Service" coincided with the start of WWII and lasted 7 years. His 21st Birthday present was 2 Crowns and the advise "While you have these in your pocket you will never be broke", he came close but never had to cash-in either of his crowns. After completing his basic training at Arrowe Park he was sent to Scotland to train as a Gunner and the operation of a new technology - Radar Tracking. After spending a lot of time on board a troop ship mored in the River Mersey he finally reached his destination camp in the Middle East. Even though he "Never fired a shot in anger" he received 4 medals the African Star, the 39-45 Star (senior) the service and war medals. He had a "brush with death" after contracting an illnes which stopped his body from being able to sweat, fortunately ice was available and his temperature brought down by laying him in an ice bath. He was demobbed with 105 days leave on 21 May 1946 and was registered with the Z reserves.

• Occupation: Grocery Store Assistant, 1946, Liscard, Wallasey, Cheshire, England. He returned to the Co-op as an assistant and trainee butcher. He met his future wife who worked as a Cashier.

• Occupation: U.K.A.E.A, 21 May 1951, Capenhurst, Wirral, Cheshire, England. William started working for the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority as a Chargehand, progressing to Shift Forman until his retirement in July 1979 completing 28 years of service.
